George Ivan Morrison, nació en Belfast en 1945, tal día como hoy 31 de agosto, hace 77 años.

El gran cantante norirlandés ha sido junto a Eric Clapton, el polémico “protagonista musical” de la pandemia en el Reino Unido, recibiendo numerosas críticas por sus pensamientos, y canciones anti confinamiento, que han llevado a algunas instancias del poder a considerarlo un irresponsable.
Nacido en el seno de una familia modesta muy aficionada a la música, de niño aprendió a tocar la flauta, el saxofón, el piano y la armónica, y formó ya en el colegio su primer grupo, The Sputniks. Más tarde le siguieron The Monarchs y los “angy young” Them, pavimentando ya desde entonces una leyenda de hombre hosco y antipático. Una realidad para la mayoría, una leyenda urbana para él.
¿Quién dijo que Van no hablaba a los periodistas?. Van Morrison se despachó a gusto, con un periodista amigo del Telegraph de Belfast, en su país natal.
Para empezar, dijo que lo de su mala leche y su pésimo sentido del humor, y de mal fario, es sólo un mito. Y afirmó que es un producto de la imaginación de los periodistas ‘vagos’, que necesitan más sentido del humor.
En una amplia entrevista, Van Morrison también reveló que está demasiado cansado para ser sólo un trotamundos, un simple músico más.
Van Morrison asegura que prefiere hacer pequeños conciertos cerca de casa como los de aquel día de agosto para celebrar su cumpleaños, en Cyprus Avenue, al este de Belfast, que es la calle bordeada de árboles que inspiró una de sus canciones más populares.
Van insiste en que se muere de risa cuando se le pregunta acerca de los cambios de mal humor en el escenario, con músicos como con Chris Farlowe, que tocó con él recientemente en el Dunluce Castle, cerca de Portrush.
Van Morrison revela también en la entrevista que algunas personas todavía lo llaman por su nombre completo, Ivan .
Y se rebela:
“Sí, bueno, tenemos una risa falsa. Nunca escriben sobre estas cosas en las revistas de rock . Es preferible mantener mi mitología . Es decir, que soy un coñazo de tío, muy severo y estoy siempre de mal humor. Pero son ellos lo que nunca se rien. Son unos periodistas perezosos”.
Morrison afirma que hoy en día sólo le gusta “cruzar el puente de su hogar, terminar un concierto y volver a casa”.

También habla de la espontaneidad de sus actuaciones, con su banda, a veces sin saber qué canción viene a continuación.
Habrá que mandársela a Sony esta entrevista, que distribuye sus discos, para que se enteren de que es mentira cuando dijeron que Morrison no hace entrevistas.
Van Morrison tuvo un hijo con su primera esposa, Janet Rigsbee. Shana Morrison nació en 1970 y ahora es cantautora por derecho propio.
También tiene dos hijos de la segunda esposa Michelle Rocca: Aibbe , nacido en 2006 y Fionn Ivan Patrick ,nacido en 2007).
En diciembre de 2009, su “tour manager”, Gigi Lee, dio a luz a un hijo e insistió en que Morrison era el padre.
Lee anunció el nacimiento del niño en el sitio web oficial de Morrison, pero Morrison negó la paternidad. El hijo de Lee murió en enero de 2011 de diabetes, y Lee murió poco después de cáncer de garganta.

He was voted the Best International Male Singer of 2007 at the inaugural International Awards in Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, London.
Morrison has also appeared in a number of “Greatest” lists, including the TIME magazine list of The All-Time 100 Albums, which contained Astral Weeks and Moondance
he appeared at number thirteen on the list of WXPN’s 885 All Time Greatest Artists.
In 2000, Morrison ranked twenty-fifth on American cable music channel VH1’s list of its “100 Greatest Artists of Rock and Roll”.
In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Van Morrison forty-second on their list of “Greatest Artists of All Time”.
Paste ranked him twentieth in their list of “100 Greatest Living Songwriters” in 2006.
Q ranked him twenty-second on their list of “100 Greatest Singers” in April 2007
he was voted twenty-fourth on the November 2008 list of Rolling Stone magazine’s 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.
Three of Morrison’s songs appear in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll: “Brown Eyed Girl“, “Madame George” and “Moondance“.
Morrison has been announced as of the 2010 honorees listed in the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In August 2013, it was announced that Morrison would receive the Freedom of Belfast, the highest honour the city can bestow.
On 15 November 2013, Morrison became the 79th recipient of the award, presented at the Waterfront Hall for his career achievements. After receiving the award, he performed a free concert for residents who won tickets from a lottery system.
In August 2014, a “Van Morrison Trail” was established in East Belfast by Morrison in partnership with the Connswater Community Greenway. It is a self-guided trail, which over the course of 3.5 kilometers leads to eight places that were important to Morrison and inspirational to his music.
On 2 September 2014, Morrison was presented with the Legend award at the GQ Men of the Year ceremony at Royal Opera House in London.
On 13 October 2014, Morrison received his fifth BMI Million-Air Award for 11 million radio plays of the song Brown Eyed Girl making it one of the Top 10 Songs of all time on US radio and television. Morrison has also received Million-Air awards for Have I Told You Lately
The Songwriter’s Hall of Fame announced on 8 April 2015 that Morrison will be the 2015 recipient of the Johnny Mercer Award on 18 June 2015 at their 46th Annual Induction and Awards Dinner in New York City.
In 2015 he was knighted for his services to popular music.
