Henry McCullough, el divino guitarrista, cumpliría 79 años. Hace seus años falleció, para gran tristeza mía. Su mujer Josie fue quien comunicó su muerte. Tenía 72 años. Recio irlandés del norte, como Van Morrison.

Jamás se me olvidará la primera vez que ví tocar al increíble Henry McCullough, un 13 de mayo de 1973, en el Capitol Theatre de Cardiff, en la tercera actuación de Paul Mc Cartney y Wings, de su primera gira seria.
Y fue un día después de haberme quedado estupefacto viendo a David Bowie, en el Earls Court de Londres. Fuimos en procesión mi gran Rafael Revert y mi entrañable Joaquín Luqui. Los tres juntos.
Cuando llegó “My Love” , siempre me quedé impresionado. Era un excepcional guitarrista. Un guitarrista superior. El solo de “My Love” está hoy catalogado como uno entre los diez mejores de la historia de la música.
Impresionante. Pero tampoco se puede olvidar su trabajo en el “Live and Let Die”, que también tocaron en Cardiff. Increíble. La gira era para promocionar ese single de James Bond y el nuevo álbum “Red Rose Speedway”.
No aguantaba a Linda y a Paul y los dejó tirados antes de viajar a Lagos para hacer “Band on the Run. Henry siempre tuvo mal carácter y como buen irlandés era un gran bebedor.
Henry tuvo a The People, como su primera banda. Pura psicodelia. El grupo se acabó convirtiendo en Eire Apparent. Fue músico de acompañamiento de Eric Burdon y Jimi Hendrix en sus primeros años.
Hasta llegar a la banda de Joe Cocker. La fabulosa Grease Band, donde estaba también el fenómeno de Chris Staiton. Henry tocó con Joe Cocker en Woodstock.
Tocó luego en Jesucristo Superstar y hasta con Spooky Tooth. Hasta que Paul le echó el guante. El solo de Henry en “My Love “siempre dejó perplejo a Paul. Uno de los más grandes de la historia y por lo que Henry pasará a la historia. “Puro blues”, decía Paul.
Van Morrison, con el que también trabajó, no tardó en darle la mejor de sus despedidas. Pero Henry jamás tuvo suerte.
George Harrison le echó una mano cuando le hizo artista de su sello Dark Horse. Henry hizo un enorme álbum con “Mind your Own Business”, pero no tuvo éxito.
Lo último que hizo con intención y calidad fue su disco “Belfast to Boston”. Escúchenlo, por favor.
