Hace unos años se editó nada más y nada menos que el álbum de la obra integral de Chuck Berry. Una caja de 16 CDs, 21 horas de música en total: “Chuck Berry: The Complete Studio Recordings . . . Plus!”, que recopila todo lo que Chuck grabó, desde su primera sesión en 1954, hasta el oscuro y casero “Rock It”, su último disco en 1979.
El extraordinario sello alemán Bear Family (conocido por sus reediciones exhaustivas) edita una caja que va a contener a todos los chuck berrys, no sólo va a estar el maestro del rhythm and blues y uno de los más grandes artistas de toda la historia del rock and roll, sino que también sus encarnaciones menos conocidas: líder de una big-band, cantante de música disco (“Havanna Moon”), crooner country, viajero psicodélico…
Y también está el de las jam-sessions con su colega en Chess, Bo Diddley (el genial, clásico LP de ambos “Two Great Guitars”. De los 16 CDs, cinco son en directo. la caja trae un libro de 250 páginas con una introducción de Paul McCartney y un concienzudo trabajo discográfico de los trabajos de Chuck, paar ello Richard Weize, fundador de Bear Family, se ha valido de una red de fanáticos de Chuck Berry para el proyecto.
“Universal ha sacado tres cajas recientemente, pero la nuestra es 10 veces mejor”, ha dicho, y se ha quedado tan pancho, porque es completamente cierto, no engaña a nadie.
La box set se completa con un segundo libro repleto de fotos de Berry no vistas jamás, tomadas por su primo, el fotógrafo profesional, Harry Davis. Hay incluso algunas de Chuck en el Cosmopolitan Club en 1954-55, allí es donde Chuck Berry se dio a conocer.
